Leonard Spano
The Yonkers Columbus Day Celebration Committee is proud to announce Leonard Spano as the recipient of the 2026 Lucia A. Trovato Humanitarian Award.
A lifelong Yonkers resident, Leonard has dedicated his life to serving others — through law enforcement, education, youth programs, charitable causes, and his unwavering commitment to children and families throughout Yonkers and Westchester County.
Leonard served 23 years with the Westchester County Police Department, including 10 years assigned to the United States Drug Enforcement Administration, and rose to the rank of Sergeant. He also served as President of the Westchester County Police Benevolent Association before retiring from law enforcement in 2007.
His commitment to service continued through The Westchester School for Special Children, where he became Executive Director in 2010. Under Leonard’s leadership, the organization has expanded its programs and facilities while providing education, support and opportunity to hundreds of children and young adults with autism, intellectual disabilities and multiple disabilities.
Leonard also serves as Chairman of the Yonkers Police Athletic League, continuing his lifelong commitment to our young people, families and community.
Beginning in 2025, our Humanitarian Award was renamed in memory of our beloved longtime Chairperson Lucia A. Trovato, who passed away in 2024. Lucia devoted so much of herself to this committee and to the Yonkers community, and we are proud that this award continues to honor her legacy of compassion, service and giving back.
