Spring Comes to Westchester

By Joan Katen

In January, I feel the weight of winter’s grey skies and leafless trees.

Its chill invades my soul, pulls me in upon myself, and makes my steps heavy.

Late February’s breezes and stronger sun give a hint of warmer times to come.

March winds, bearing seeds, whirl around me, forcing me to awaken to the magic of the change of seasons.

April’s luxurious warm rains, gently wake sleeping seeds to the good news that spring has surely arrived!

Yellow Forsythia and daffodils help us to become accustomed to colors again and anticipate the glorious range of hues waiting to appear.

And then there is May, when responding to the warm sun and rain, many buds open to reveal their colorful treasures.

There is a riot of color as pink and lavender Azaleas compete with red and yellow Tulips and purple Irises.

It’s as if Mother Nature, pleased with her handiwork, joyfully waits for applause.

The Birds comply, making cheerful, appreciative sounds in the cool dawn of the morning, calling to all to wake up, don’t waste a moment, come and see what has happened.

Boats lose their winter canvas coats and fill the harbors.

Suddenly, chairs stowed for winter, appear outside the restaurants on
sidewalks and on terraces facing Long Island Sound.

And our neighbors walk with light and springy steps, wearing bright colors to fill the chairs.
