New York Broadens Work Zone Speed Camera Enforcement: What It Means for Motorists

New York drivers could soon encounter enforcement cameras in significantly more work zones following the state’s expansion of the
Automated Work Zone Speed Enforcement (AWZSE) Program. Under recently enacted legislation, the New York State Department of Transportation can now deploy work zone speed cameras on a much broader range of roadways under its jurisdiction, expanding beyond the controlled-access highways where the program was previously restricted to.

The expansion comes as state officials continue to emphasize work zone safety and the role automated enforcement has played since the program launched in April 2023. State transportation officials say more than 700,000 speed camera violation notices have been issued through the program, which has now been extended and expanded to additional work zones across New York.

As the state increases the use of automated enforcement, attorneys are available to discuss what the changes mean for motorists, including how the program operates, potential penalties, and what drivers should know if they receive a speed camera violation notice.
“Most New Yorkers understand the importance of protecting highway workers, but many drivers may not realize how significantly this program is expanding,” said Derrick Hogan, Partner at Tully Rinckey PLLC.

“With speed enforcement cameras now eligible for use in work zones on a much broader range of roadways, motorists should take time to understand how the program works, what penalties may apply, and what options are available if they receive a speed camera violation notice. As enforcement becomes more widespread, public awareness and education will be critical.”

  • Fines for the first work zone speeding violation begin at $50 and increase with additional
    violations.
  • The AWZSE has been deployed more than 11,000 times since enforcement began in April 2023.
  • In 2025, there were 366 work zone crashes that resulted in 58 injuries and two deaths.
