On August 4, The New York Times ran a story by food reporter Mahira Rivers titled “The Best Ice Cream Shops.” Rivera highlights 18 New York City Ice Cream shops, including Lost Borough Ice Cream, which has its original shop in Yonkers, at 1 Larkin Plaza.
Rivera writes, “Patrick Cruz and Kawana Jefferson first opened their ice cream shop in the ‘lost borough’ of Yonkers, N.Y. At their new uptown scoop shop, Mr. Cruz, who is Dominican and Puerto Rican, churns up fun, culturally relevant flavors like Dominican vanilla or bizcocho, a shout-out to the yellow cake staple of birthdays and baby showers. The Grape Nut flavor tastes oaty and milky like the last dregs of a cereal bowl. Toppings here are all free, be it a drizzle of olive oil or a sprinkle of Tajín, and while there isn’t any seating, Fort Tryon Park is not too far away for an ice cream stroll.”
Before the Times story, Lost Borough already received a lot of buzz and great social media about its handcrafted, small-batch ice cream, sorbets, homemade banana pudding, cookies, and creative drinks.
Co-owners Kawana Jefferson, who brings her experience as a Yonkers entrepreneur and former school psychologist, and Patrick Cruz have created another Yonkers treasure in Lost Borough.
And the name “Lost Borough” is a great homage to the fact that more than 100 years ago, Yonkers was considered to become part of New York City and would have been the 5th Borough. Now they have a NYC location in the Inwood section of the Bronx, with more coming.
But after all the hype and media coverage, what really matters is the product. Flavors include Yonkers Blackout, made with chocolate ice cream, Golden Oreos, and chocolate sauce; Café Bustelo, a sweet-cream ice cream flavored with espresso; Fig Walnut; Taro; Red Velvet; and Grape-Nut. Sorbets, cookies, and drinks round out the menu, but Lost Borough’s most talked-about item is its Banana pudding, sold by the gallon online at lostboroughicecream.com.
We will see you there soon.
