The Yonkers Police Department officially launched its new Facility Dog Program with the ceremonial swearing-in of its first two Facility Dogs, K9 Nilsen and K9 Gator.
Unlike traditional patrol or detection dogs, Facility Dogs are specially trained to provide comfort and emotional support to victims of crime, children who have experienced trauma, officers and department personnel, and members of the community during times of crisis. They serve as a valuable resource during interviews with victims and witnesses, critical incidents, community outreach events, school visits, and officer wellness initiatives.
Nilsen will partner with Police Commissioner Christopher Sapienza, while Gator will partner with Officer Genesis Vasquez who is currently assigned to the Domestic Violence Unit. The two handlers and their partners recently completed an intensive two-week certification program through Puppies Behind Bars, preparing them to deploy the dogs in support of daily departmental operations.
The Yonkers Police Department’s Facility Dog Program was made possible through partnership with Puppies Behind Bars, a nationally recognized nonprofit organization that breeds, raises, and trains service dogs. Through a unique partnership with several correctional facilities, incarcerated individuals spend more than a year helping to raise and train these dogs under the supervision of Puppies Behind Bars staff. Nilsen and Gator were raised and trained at the Green Haven Correctional Facility in Stormville, New York. The program not only produces exceptional service dogs, but also provides incarcerated participants with vocational skills, personal responsibility, and the opportunity to give back by serving communities across the country.
Despite the resources necessary to train and assign dogs of this caliber, Nilsen and Gator were provided to the Yonkers Police Department at no cost to the City through the generosity of Puppies Behind Bars and its supporters.

Facility Dogs are becoming an increasingly valuable resource for law enforcement agencies nationwide, helping reduce trauma, support victims, promote officer wellness, and strengthen relationships between police departments and the communities they serve. Their unique ability to provide comfort during difficult interviews, critical incidents, and times of crisis has made them an important part of modern policing.
The Yonkers community recently experienced that impact firsthand when neighboring law enforcement agencies from Tuckahoe, Greenburgh, Scarsdale, and White Plains deployed their Facility Dogs to assist the Yonkers Police Department during the response to a tragic incident at a local school. Their presence provided comfort and emotional support to students, staff, first responders, and others affected, reinforcing the value of establishing a Facility Dog Program in Yonkers.
As Yonkers’ first Facility Dogs, Nilsen and Gator will become an integral part of departmental operations, supporting victims, assisting during critical incidents and investigations, participating in school and community outreach programs, and promoting officer wellness. Their addition marks another step forward in the Yonkers Police Department’s commitment to innovative, compassionate, and community-focused policing.
