Abundio Hernandez Canto, 36, of Yonkers, turned himself over to Yonkers police, who then handed him off to the NYPD to face justice for his alleged rape of a 13-year old on June 23 at about 10 p.m.
The incident happened at the corner of West 261st Street and Broadway, which is on the Bronx-Yonkers border. Both the victim and Canto were traveling on the Bx9 bus and both got off at the last exit.
Canto is accused of dragging the victim into Van Cortland Park and raping her. He pled not guilty and was let go on supervised release at the request of the Bronx DA’s office.
There are conflicting reports about how this alleged crime came to be. The Daily News reported through its sources that the victim and Canto were friendly on the bus and both got off together and went into the park. When the victim refused to consent to sex with Canto, she alleges that he raped her.
Canto saw his photo on the NYPD social media sites and turned himself in.
Anyone with additional information about this incident is asked to call the NYPD’s Sex Crimes Hotline at 1-212-267-7273.
