Yorktown pools reopen after structural upgrades

Yorktown Supervisor Ed Lachterman, left with Parks Superintendent James Martorano, Jr.

The Brian J. Slavin Aquatic Facility partially reopened this weekend after a $750,000 rehabilitation.

The upgrades are designed to extend the life of one of Yorktown’s most popular summer destinations. The children’s interactive pool and the main pool reopened on June 20. The diving pool and the children’s wading pool are expected to reopen on June 27.

“The scope of the work was taking out all the existing tile that was on the sides of the main pool’s gutter system… and then putting in this stainless steel facing as well as this PVC decking,” said Parks Superintendent James Martorano, Jr., adding that the new pool borders are more durable and easier on bare feet than ceramic tiles.

The Parks Department was spending about $20,000 annually to repair tiles that lifted from their foundation during the winter freeze-thaw cycles. Each year, the tile repairs forced crews into a race against time to get the facility ready for opening weekend.

Town Supervisor Ed Lachterman said the rehabilitation project was also about protecting the pool’s underlying structure and wiring as it ages.

“With the long-term improvements now in place, Yorktown families can look forward to many more summers at the Slavin facility, with less money going into emergency repairs and more stability for a cherished community asset,” said Supervisor Lachterman.

The Slavin facility will be open from June 20 until September 7. On weekends and holidays, the complex will be open from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. Weekdays between June 22 and 26, it will open from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. Starting June 29, it will open from noon until 7 p.m. on weekdays.

Residents must obtain a pool pass to use Yorktown’s public pools.
