$18 million from President Trump’s Working Families Tax Cut Act will modernize air traffic control systems at key New York aviation hub

U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy and New York Congressman Mike Lawler (NY-17) today visited Westchester Airport (HPN) and toured its air traffic control tower to highlight upcoming tech upgrades.

Thanks to President Trump and Republicans in Congress like Representative Lawler, the Working Families Tax Cut Act delivered a $12.5 billion investment in America’s air traffic control system. This brand-new air traffic control system will enhance safety, reduce delays, and make the travel experience more seamless for families nationwide.

Over the next two and a half years, $18 million will be invested at HPN to:

  • Install a brand-new Surface Awareness Initiative (SAI)*
  • Replace IP Voice Switches
  • Transition paper flight strips to electronic flight strips
  • Install a Tower Simulation System (TSS)
  • Replace radars and Displays for Controllers

“The Trump Administration is investing in travel hubs small and large to ensure our air traffic controllers have the state-of-the-art equipment they deserve. Servicing over 170,000 flights annually, Westchester Airport is an important hub for both commercial flights and general aviation just outside of New York City. Thanks to Congressman Lawler’s support for the Working Families Tax Cut, HPN is saying goodbye to antiquated radars and flimsy paper flight strips so they can continue to move the flying public safely,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy.

“Airports like Westchester County Airport are vital transportation hubs for communities throughout the country, connecting families, businesses, and visitors, while supporting commerce, tourism, and emergency services throughout their regions,” said U.S. Congressman Mike Lawler (NY-17). “Here in the Hudson Valley, from runway improvements and terminal modernization to nearly $18 million in expected air traffic control upgrades, projects like this strengthen our aviation infrastructure, support economic growth, create jobs, and improve the experience for hundreds of thousands of passengers who travel through this airport each year. I want to thank Secretary Duffy for visiting the Hudson Valley and his leadership in advancing these important investments.”
