From the Westchester County Police:
Great job by patrol officers who seized this illegal handgun and took two career criminals into custody the other night following an investigation on the Hutchinson River Parkway in New Rochelle.
At 6:45 p.m. Sunday, (April 26) the Real Time Crime Center broadcast an alert that a Volkswagen Jetta was traveling on the Cross County Parkway with phony Pennsylvania license plates. Patrol officers quickly located the vehicle, followed it on to the Hutch and made a traffic stop south of Webster Avenue in New Rochelle.
A traffic stop for improper plates soon turned into a felony gun collar due to the observations and diligence of the officers at the scene. A loaded Taurus 9mm handgun with a high-capacity magazine was recovered from the car, and two New York City men were arrested.
Subsequent investigation determined that that the handgun was stolen during a burglary in Georgia in 2023 and that both suspects have prior felony convictions.
Both men were charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon 2nd Degree; two counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon 3rd Degree (due to the high-capacity magazine and their previous convictions); and Criminal Possession of Stolen Property 4th Degree.
They were booked at County Police headquarters in Hawthorne and held overnight for arraignment in New Rochelle City Court. At arraignment they were remanded to the Westchester County Jail in lieu of bail.
WCPD officers and detectives also determined that the vehicle was wanted in connection to an investigation in another jurisdiction. That agency was notified of the arrests and the impoundment of the vehicle.
Due to that other ongoing investigation, we are withholding the suspects’ identities at this time.
