WESTCHESTER COUNTY OFFERS FREE COMPOST TO RESIDENTS AT ADDITIONAL MAY EVENTS

Registration Now Open for Final Spring Compost Giveaways Across the County

The Westchester County Department of Environmental Facilities (DEF) has opened registration for two additional residential compost distribution events in May after all previous events reached capacity, offering residents another opportunity to receive free compost produced locally through the County’s CompostED program.

The events will take place at locations across Westchester and are part of the County’s ongoing effort to promote food scrap recycling, reduce waste and support sustainability initiatives. Compost distributed at the events is produced at the County’s CompostED facility in Valhalla, which processes up to two tons of food scraps each week. They also serve as an opportunity for CompostED staff to engage directly with the local community and encourage participation in the County’s Residential Food Scrap Transportation and Disposal (RFSTAD) Program.

Event Schedule:

•                Tuesday, May 12 – Sprain Ridge Park, Yonkers | 4–7 p.m.

•                Wednesday, May 20 – Household Material Recovery Facility, Valhalla | 4–7 p.m.

Residents interested in purchasing compost bins or rain barrels must place an order in advance and pick up items at the following location:

•                Wednesday, May 20, 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Household Material Recovery Facility, 15 Woods Road, Valhalla

Important Information:

•                Due to limited quantities, registration is required for all events.

•                Residents must register online for a specific time slot to receive compost.

•                Registration can be completed at: https://environment.WestchesterCountyNY.gov/residential-compost-distribution-events

•                Each registered resident will receive two 1-cubic-foot bags of compost.

•                DEF staff will be on-site to verify registration and load pre-bagged compost into vehicles.

The CompostED Program also offers tours of the facility. To schedule a tour, or learn more about CompostED, residents can contact DEF at CompostEd@WestchesterCountyNY.gov, or visit [Environment.WestchesterCountyNY.gov]Environment.WestchesterCountyNY.gov, or call the Recycling HelpLine at (914)813-5425.

This project is partially funded under USDA CFWR agreement #2025-70510-44353.
