Sister of the victim, on Yonkers Voice
On April 9 the Yonkers Police Department reported the following:
On Tuesday, April 7, 2026, at approximately 7:15 pm, the Yonkers Police Department received a call from a woman reporting a male actively attacking several people inside an apartment at 165 Bruce Avenue. The caller also reported that the male was armed with a knife.
Responding Officers arrived and were confronted with an active, ongoing assault in the entryway, where a male was assaulting a resident. Officers initially deployed a Taser, which was ineffective. A second Taser was then deployed, but was likewise unsuccessful. Officers moved in and were able to stop the attack without escalating force and place the suspect into handcuffs.
Shortly thereafter, the male suspect became unresponsive. Medical aid from Officers and emergency medical personnel was rendered immediately, and he was transported to an area hospital. Despite lifesaving efforts, the male suspect was ultimately pronounced deceased. The name of this male suspect is not being released at this time, pending family notifications.
In accordance with standard protocol, the Yonkers Police Department’s Internal Affairs Division immediately initiated an investigation and notified the New York State Attorney General’s Office.
Preliminary investigation based on a review of victim statements, witness statements, and body-worn camera video revealed that the suspect had been using drugs with a friend before violently attacking two different victims. Victims sustained significant injuries, including bite wounds and blunt-force trauma inflicted with household objects, including a frying pan and a metal stovetop grate, as well as a laceration consistent with a sharp instrument.
The same preliminary findings indicate that the only force used by responding Officers was two unsuccessful Taser deployments, and that no physical strikes (punches, kicks, etc.) or impact weapons (e.g., a baton) were used.
An autopsy is currently underway. During the examination, several significant underlying medical conditions were identified, which may have contributed to this unfortunate outcome. Toxicology results are pending and may provide additional insight into the incident.
This is the information confirmed at this stage of the investigation. Any claims to the contrary are not supported by the evidence gathered at this stage of the investigation. At this time, there is no indication that the Taser deployment or any actions taken by responding Officers caused the suspect’s death.
The Internal Affairs Division will continue its investigation in coordination with the New York State Attorney General’s Office to ensure a thorough and transparent review.
This remains a tragic outcome, and the City of Yonkers and the Yonkers Police Department extend their sincere condolences to the individual’s family during this difficult time.
Yonkers Voice News conducted an interview with the victims family, Sharia, one of the victims sister, said “We are looking for answers. They should be simple answers that we should get from the Yonkers Police, but it is very evident that they are hiding something.
“Witnesses are telling us that he died right on the scene. One woman who was with him said that he was grabbing her arm while they were tasing him, and she said that excessive tasing was the cause of his death, and that multiple officers were tasing my brother and then he collapsed.
“They said they were responding to a domestic violence call. I don’t know what else was invovled but I do know that my brother didn’t have to die last night. No matter what the situation was it didn’t cause for death.
“My brother was not an agressive person, but he was a chatty person so he might have been mouthing off and maybe they didn’t like that.”

The victim has yet to be identified.
