Statement from the Superintendent of Yonkers Public Schools
As Superintendent of Schools, I want to acknowledge the deeply troubling allegations that have recently surfaced regarding César Chávez, a historic figure whose name is carried by one of our schools.
Like many others across the country, we are aware of reports detailing serious allegations of abuse involving women and minors linked to his past leadership in the United Farm Workers movement. These revelations are painful and have prompted reflection within communities, organizations, and institutions nationwide.
First and foremost, we support and honor the individuals who have come forward. It takes extraordinary courage to speak out about experiences of harm, especially when those experiences involve people in positions of power. We recognize the strength of survivors and reaffirm our unwavering commitment to creating safe, supportive, and respectful environments for everyone.
Within Yonkers Public Schools, our priority remains clear: the well-being, dignity, and safety of every student, staff member, and family we serve.
We are currently reviewing our Board of Education Policy 7500, which guides our process for naming and dedicating school district property. This review is part of our ongoing effort to ensure our policies reflect our values and meet the highest standards of care and accountability.
Yonkers Public Schools remains firmly dedicated to excellence, academic achievement, ethical leadership, and a culture grounded in respect, equity, and accountability. We will continue to communicate openly with our community as we move forward with our review and next steps regarding the school’s name and identity.
In moments like this, our responsibility is not only to inform but also to lead with empathy, integrity, and purpose.
