METRO-NORTH EMPLOYEE SENTENCED FOR THEFT OF OVER $200K IN PUBLIC FUNDS”

Westchester County District Attorney Susan Cacace announced today that a Metro-North employee who stole approximately $206,000 from the agency was sentenced by Judge Erin McGoey Monday to three years’ probation.

Tom Shabani, 61, of Millwood, further paid restitution to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which operates the Metro-North Railroad, totaling $206,000. He also agreed to forfeit 25% of his pension as a condition of the plea agreement.

Shabani had pleaded guilty on Nov. 24 to Grand Larceny in the Fourth Degree, a class E felony.

DA Cacace said: “Corruption simply doesn’t pay. Not only did the defendant have to return every cent he stole, but he will be forfeiting a substantial portion of his pension as a condition of this plea. The people of Westchester County are entitled to expect that honest work is being performed by the public servants who keep the business of government operating for our entire community. But let this be a lesson to that small portion with ulterior motives: Your graft will be short-lived. My administration takes a zero-tolerance approach to public corruption.”

Between 2024 and 2025, the defendant was employed by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, Metro-North, as a cashier at the agency’s White Plains office. The defendant repeatedly stole stacks of cash out of a counting room, concealing the money in Tupperware-style containers.

The stolen funds amounted to approximately $206,000. When Shabani’s vehicle was later searched, some of the stolen money was discovered alongside hundreds of dollars worth of lottery tickets.

Shabani is no longer employed by the Metro-North. The case was investigated by the MTA Police Department. The case was prosecuted by Public and Law Enforcement Integrity Bureau Chief Dyer Halpern.
