Lt. Gov. Antonio Delgado
Jasmine Gripper & Ana María Archila, Co-Directors of the New York Working Families Party, released the following statement:
“Yesterday’s news that Lieutenant Governor Antonio Delgado is ending his campaign for Governor marked an important moment in New York politics — and underscores the impact of a real debate about affordability, democracy, and leadership in our state.
Lieutenant Governor Antonio Delgado did what he set out to do: he offered New Yorkers an alternative vision and added his voice to the chorus of more than a million New Yorkers who voted to demand bold solutions to the rising cost of living. We are grateful for his leadership and proud of the Working Families Party affiliates who supported his campaign early and helped create a moment of genuine deliberation inside our Party and across New York.
That debate mattered. In response, Governor Kathy Hochul moved to strengthen her commitments on childcare and to push back against Donald Trump’s cruel and dangerous immigration agenda. This is what happens when working people organize and demand more from their leaders.
Over the weekend, the Working Families Party held its state convention — a real debate about the Party’s direction and responsibility in this moment of rising costs and rising authoritarianism. Nearly 200 members from across the state engaged in serious debate and made a principled decision about how to best use the Party’s power. A majority of members ultimately chose to nominate a placeholder candidate, recognizing meaningful progress by Governor Hochul on childcare and immigration, and Delgado’s important contribution to the debate.”
The bottom line remains unchanged: New York’s billionaires and big corporations must pay their fair share to fund universal childcare, build truly affordable housing, protect immigrant communities and uphold working families. The Working Families Party will continue fighting to make that future real.”
