Youth Basketball Coach Indicted on Predatory Sex Assault Charges, More Victims Sought

DA Cacace urges anyone with additional information about the defendant, Dwayne Murray, to contact her office’s tip line

On Dec. 9, Westchester County District Attorney Susan Cacace announced today that Dwayne Murray, a prominent youth basketball coach in Mount Vernon, was indicted on new charges in relation to his alleged sexual abuse of a child.

Murray, 63, of Mount Vernon, was arraigned Tuesday afternoon on an indictment charging him with Predatory Sexual Assault Against a Child, a class A felony, and Course of Sexual Conduct Against a Child in the First Degree, a class B felony. He pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Westchester County Court Judge Robert Prisco issued a temporary order of protection on behalf of the victim. Murray is due back in court on March 3. He is currently remanded at the Westchester County Jail.

The top charge carries a maximum potential penalty of 25 years to life in state prison.

DA Cacace said: “As alleged in charging documents, Mr. Murray took advantage of his position of prominence in the Mount Vernon community to prey upon a vulnerable population.

“Let me be clear: my administration has zero tolerance for crimes against children. Wherever we learn of threats to the children in our communities, we work tirelessly to protect those children from further harm and bring those responsible to account. The children of Mount Vernon, and all of Westchester County, will always have me by their side.

“Anyone with additional information about Mr. Murray’s conduct should contact my office. We treat every tip with the utmost urgency.”

As alleged in charging documents, between Oct. 1, 2023, and March 1, 2024, Murray engaged in two or more acts of sexual conduct against a child less than 13 years old, including at least one instance of oral sexual conduct.

DA Cacace urges anyone with more information about Murray or this case to contact her office’s tip line at (914) 995-TIPS (8477).

Editor’s Note: Murray continued to proclaim his innocence until his conviction. And when the accusations were first made, Murray got some of his friends in Mt. Vernon politics to stand behind him. If Murray would like us to remind our readers exactly what you did, let us know.
