Yorktown officials celebrated the 100th birthday of resident Kathleen Marencek last week with a party at the senior center.
Marencek, who logged the century mark on May 17, along with 12 nonagenarians also celebrating birthdays, received certificates from elected officials, lunch and birthday cake at the municipal nutrition program that serves hot meals five days a week to residents 60 and over.
“Birthdays are one of those double-edged swords. We hate to say, oh my God, we got another year older. Yet, oh great, I got another year older!” said Supervisor Ed Lachterman, who distributed certificates to the birthday celebrants. “It’s just amazing to chat with someone over 100. Think of the history you’ve lived through.”
Marencek is not the only Yorktown resident who recently celebrated 100 years. Evelyn O’Neill of Jefferson Village recently became a centenarian and was invited to the party, but she could not attend.
