Repair Café Returns to Crestwood Library: A Hands-On Community Sustainability Event

The Yonkers Public Library’s Crestwood Branch is excited to host another Repair Café on Friday, May 17, from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM at 16 Thompson Street, Yonkers, NY 10707.

The Repair Café is a free, hands-on community event where residents can bring broken household items—such as small appliances, electronics, bikes, jewelry, and clothing—to be fixed by skilled volunteers and local experts. The goal is to encourage sustainability, reduce landfill waste, and empower attendees with knowledge on how to repair items themselves in the future.

Repair Cafés are a fantastic way to build community, promote environmental awareness, and pass on valuable DIY skills,” said Z Baird, Crestwood Library Administrator. “It’s about more than just fixing things—it’s about learning, connecting, and taking care of our planet together.”

Why Participate?

By attending the Repair Café, community members are:

  • Reducing landfill waste
  • Challenging throwaway culture
  • Strengthening neighborhood bonds
  • Learning practical repair skills through hands-on observation

How Does It Work?

Participants will check in at the event and be paired with a knowledgeable volunteer or “repair coach” who specializes in the item type—whether it’s clothing, electronics, or jewelry. Attendees are encouraged to observe and ask questions during the repair, gaining insight into how they can fix similar issues on their own in the future.

Crestwood Library invites people of all ages to join in this meaningful event. Volunteers with repair experience are also encouraged to participate—interested individuals can contact Jackie Leone at jleone@ypl.org.

Help create a more sustainable Yonkers!
