Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano and the Yonkers Police Department announced the formation of its Domestic Violence Unit (DVU) specializing in case management of intimate partner domestic violence incidents. It is the first dedicated Domestic Violence Unit in the City since 2009.

The DVU is funded under the Governor’s Statewide Targeted Reductions in Intimate Partner Violence (STRIVE) initiative.

“We are committed to prioritizing the safety and well-being of survivors of domestic abuse,” said Mayor Mike Spano. “Thank you to the State Delegation for their advocacy in funding this specialized unit, which will allow for more effective investigation and support. We know these officers will use their training to build trust and create an impact in the City of Yonkers. It’s a significant step toward creating an even safer community.”

Felony domestic violence incidents reached a five-year high in the City of Yonkers in 2024, with a 42% increase from pre-COVID-19 reports.

The DVU will have a victim-centered approach, prioritizing safety and connecting survivors to support services and resources. It will collaborate with multiple partners, including shelters, programs, law enforcement agencies, and the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office.

Yonkers Police Commissioner Christopher Sapienza said, “Through strong partnerships with domestic violence advocates, support programs, shelters and the District Attorney’s Office, this unit will create a comprehensive support network for survivors. We are confident that this collaborative approach will make a significant impact in enhancing our Department’s response to incidents of domestic violence.”

The unit will consist of one supervisor and two officers, including one Spanish-speaking officer. A dedicated phone line, (914) 377-7322, will begin operating on Monday, April 7, for residents to connect with the DV unit directly.
