Westchester County Expands Free EV Charging Stations

Free EV Charging Now Available at the County Center’s South Parking Lot

Westchester County has installed 25 new electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at the County Center’s South Parking Lot, providing free charging for up to 50 electric vehicles at a time. The initiative, funded through a $115,000 Clean Energy Communities Grant from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), is part of the County’s broader commitment to sustainability, clean energy adoption, minimizing air pollution and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The charging stations are available at no cost to event attendees, mass transit commuters, Bicycle Sunday participants and visitors to the Bronx River Parkway Reservation walk and bike trail. This initiative aligns with the County’s Climate Action Plan, which prioritizes reducing emissions and expanding access to clean energy infrastructure. The Hudson Valley Regional Council, a multi-county organization dedicated to regional planning and sustainability, partnered with the County to help implement the program.

Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins said: “Providing free EV charging at the County Center is another way Westchester is leading the charge on sustainability. We are committed to making it easier for residents and visitors to transition to clean energy transportation while reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving air quality.”

Director of Energy Conservation and Sustainability Peter L. McCartt said: “This initiative is about making electric vehicle use more accessible and convenient for our County. Expanding our EV charging infrastructure is a practical step toward a greener Westchester, and we are proud to be taking action to support clean energy adoption. These 50 charging ports are exceptionally handy for those attending various events at the County Center but also commuting from the White Plains train station, or enjoying the park’s trails or even grabbing a bite at the nearby restaurants.”

Board of Legislators Chairman Vedat Gashi said: “Expanding EV charging is a key step in our efforts to keep our air clean, support our local economy, and make environmentally friendly transportation accessible to all Westchester residents.”

County Legislator David J. Tubiolo said: “This initiative not only promotes the use of clean energy but also embraces technology to provide a greener, more sustainable future for our community.”

County Legislator Erika L. Pierce said: “As the County Center continues to draw more people for its varied programs, adding free EV charging to its parking lot is a great perk for visitors and encourages residents to drive EVs to this special venue.”

White Plains Mayor Thomas Roach said: “My family is all-electric, and we travel everywhere in our EVs. Gas prices don’t affect us—and by driving electric, we’re helping the community, too. These charging stations are a tremendous asset for both White Plains and the County. It’s fantastic to have a partner, like Westchester County, that is so committed to electric vehicles, and we look forward to even more collaboration in the future.”

With this investment, Westchester County is taking a major step toward reducing transportation-related emissions while providing convenient, cost-free charging options for those who live, work and visit the region. The County will continue to seek opportunities to expand its EV charging network and promote clean energy adoption.

The County Center parking lots are only for permit holders unless a resident utilizes the EV chargers. To learn more about County Center parking permits, visit https://countycenter.biz/directions-and-parking.
