Yonkers Police Take More Illegal Mopeds and Motorcyles Off the Streets

From the YPD: It’s been fifty-leven days since our last targeted moped & motorcycle enforcement detail… We’re back, and our “Half the Wheels, All the Laws” operation last week did not disappoint!

Since the Summer of 2022, at the direction of Mayor Mike Spano and Commissioner Sapienza, we have conducted several dedicated details to enforce the reckless operation of mopeds and motorcycles.

Despite being something that is enforced regularly by our Officers, we found that dedicated and concentrated efforts, primarily by our experienced plainclothes units, make a significant impact on the number of illegal vehicles that we can take off the roadway.

Last Thursday, (Oct. 3) in just under 3 hours, we impounded nearly 30 mopeds, scooters, and motorcycles. These vehicles had everything from registration violations to equipment violations, and many were being operated recklessly. We issued over 50 summonses during that time- tickets that will hopefully send the message home to operators that in order to be on our streets, you have to obey the law.

The day ended with the arrest of Jacob Navarro Salguero (26) of the Bronx who thought it was a good idea to operate his black Yamaha motorcycle recklessly, speeding dangerously through rush hour traffic with no license plate. Our Pattern Crimes Unit caught up with him and placed him under arrest, issuing him 7 summonses and charging him with Reckless Endangerment, Reckless Driving, and Aggravated Unlicensed Operation for having 19 active suspensions on his license.

Since our last detail in May, we have taken almost 200 illegal mopeds, motorcycles, scooters, and recreational vehicles off the roads- over almost 300 for the year!

We won’t tolerate the dangerous and unlawful operation of recreational vehicles in our City. It continues to be one of the top complaints from our community, and it will continue to be one of our top focuses for enforcement until these operators follow the law.
