Archbishop Stepinac High School is thrilled to announce that three members of its Crusaders Varsity Basketball Program have been selected to receive 2023-2024 Catholic High School Athletic Association “AA” Basketball All – League Honors along with the prestigious Coach of the Year honor.
Johnuel “Boogie” Fland has been named Most Valuable Player. Fland, a senior from the Bronx who has signed to play basketball at the University of Kentucky next year, showcased impressive stats throughout the season, averaging 17.9 points, 6.4 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 2.6 steals per game. He also boasted a shooting percentage of 51% from the field and 38% from behind the arc. Fland’s exceptional performance on the court garnered interest from over 30 colleges and universities, culminating in his recent recognition as a McDonald’s All-American, marking a historic achievement as the third player in Stepinac history to receive this honor.
Braylan Ritvo has been named 1st Team All-League. Ritvo, a senior from New York City who has committed to playing basketball at Quinnipiac University next year, averaged 15.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks per game. Additionally, Ritvo was named the Most Valuable Player in Stepinac’s second matchup at the Hoophall West Classic against Corona Centennial (CA), where he scored 30 points and shot 8 for 10 from behind the arc.
Danny Carbuccia has been named 3rd Team All-League. Carbuccia, a junior from Yonkers, was recently chosen to represent the Dominican Republic at the 2024 Basketball Without Borders Global Camp All-Star Team during the NBA’s All-Star Weekend. Throughout the regular season, he maintained impressive averages of 9.6 points, 3.2 rebounds, and a team-leading 5.9 assists per game.
Head Coach Patrick Massaroni of White Plains has been named Coach of the Year. A Stepinac alumnus (Class of ’06), Massaroni is in his ninth year coaching the Stepinac Varsity Basketball Team, and alongside assistant coaches Rodney Swain, Allan Sheppard, and Alexis Nunez, guided the Crusaders to an impressive 21-3 overall record, including a flawless 15-0 performance in league play. Under Massaroni’s leadership, Stepinac has secured two CHSAA “AA” City Championships. Currently, the team holds the 10th spot in the United States according to ESPN’s High School Basketball Rankings.
