Ten Iona Prep Students Commit to Collegiate Sports

Ten Iona Preparatory Schoolscholar-athletes committed to playing a sport in college – including eightDivision I national letter of intent signees – as part of the school year’sfirst National Signing Day on Nov. 14.

The scholar-athletes include: Sam Bello, Maryland Baseball, Division I (West Nyack); William Citron, Cornell University, Division I (Scarsdale); Jack Cleary, Marquette Lacrosse, Division I (Bronxville); Chris DiFiore, Bucknell Baseball, Division I (Mount Kisco); John Hufnagle, Providence Lacrosse, Division I (Yorktown); Jack Keenan, Marist Baseball, Division I (White Plains); Matt Minerva, Villanova Golf, Division I (Elmsford); John Nowak, Bates Baseball, Division III (Pelham); Jake Pasacreta, University of Tampa Lacrosse, Division II (White Plains); and John Schreiber, Johns Hopkins Lacrosse, Division I (Pound Ridge).

Last year, the Gaels had a total of 31 scholar-athletes commit to play on college teams, including 17 Division I signings to schools such as Brown, MIT and Stanford. In all, 550 scholar-athletes participated in at least one sport at Iona Preparatory, with a 90.25 overall grade-point average.

“It was a great day to be a Gael, as I like to say,” said Athletic Director Bernard Mahoney. “A lot of hard work from our boys, sacrifice from their parents and the dedication of our coaches went into these commitments. We look forward to these seniors’ continued commitment to their teams and studies as they finish the year strong and prepare for the next chapter in their lives.”
