Stepinac Star Point Guard Boogie Fland to Play at Kentucky

Boogie Fland

Stepinac High School superstar point guard Boogie Fland announced last week his commitment to attend Kentucky University next fall. Fland, who was ranked by many in the college basketball scouting media as the top high school point guard in the country, will now play for legendary coach John Calipari at Kentucky.

“I chose Kentucky because of the history of success with the guards that have come through there. Coach Cal is going to challenge me to be the best version of myself. He didn’t promise me anything, playing time, shots- He only promised me a chance to compete and fight! The first fight is with myself every day and I’m betting on me!” said the 6’2″ Fland.

More than 30 of the top college basketball programs recruited Fland. The final three schools came down to Indiana, Alabama and Kentucky.

Calipari has developed point guards including Devin Booker of the Phoenix Suns. Coach Cal made several visits to Stepinac to recruit Fland.

At a press conference held at Stepinac to make the announcement, Boogie’s mom, Shakima Smith said that she chose Stepinac High school for her son to attend, but that the college decison was his to make.

Stepinac basketball coach Pat Massoroni said “Boogie doesn’t get a lot of credit for his ability to defend and rebound. He’s so long and athletic, and he cares. He shoots it well and makes the right decision.

Fland averaged 18 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists per game in his Stepinac career, which has one more season before he’s off to Kentucky.

Stepinac High School has become a basketball powerhouse, with former players AJ Griffin attending Duke, and RJ Davis attending the University of North Carolina.
