On September 2, Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano announced that he has issued a state of emergency in the City of Yonkers, effective immediately, due to effects of Hurricane Ida.
“Last night’s storm resulted in flash flooding, power outages, travel disruptions and damage in many of our low-lying areas,” said Mayor Spano. “The declaration provides us the tools necessary to quickly and safely recover from the effects of Hurricane Ida. I encourage our residents to stay off the roads and avoid all unnecessary travel during this time so our first responders can access the roads safely and effectively.”
As a result of the storm’s aftermath:
· Alternate side of the street parking is suspended today, September 2 and Friday, September 3. Meters are in effect.
· The Crestwood Branch of the Yonkers Public Library will be closed today, September 2.
· The first day of school for Yonkers Public Schools students, except prekindergarten, will be Thursday, September 9.
For residents who experienced flood damage, City crews will accept curbside pick-ups of separated piles of furniture and appliances. No construction materials will be accepted at this time (wood and sheetrock).
