3 Ways to Have Fun & Beat the Heat This Summer

Summer is a time to celebrate and enjoy the outdoors. At least, when the weather permits. At least a few times throughout the season, residents in Yonkers and Westchester can expect inclement weather in the form of heat waves. It’s a time when pools and parks fill up for those looking to beat the heat.

But learning how to have fun while staying cool isn’t always easy. Summer is a difficult time to find a balance, as most people want to soak up the sunshine and clear skies… while also avoiding sunburn, dehydration, and bouts of nausea.

If you’re looking to take full advantage of the beautiful summer weather while also staying healthy and energized, then we’ve got a few suggestions. These three tips will help you enjoy the summer vacation while also beating the heat.

Know When to Stay Indoors

This might seem obvious, but it’s worth reiterating: there are days when it’s too hot to spend more than an hour or two outside, even if you’re poolside. It pays to know when to stay indoors. And given the availability of at-home entertainment, this isn’t a bad option by any stretch of the imagination.

Beat the heat by staying inside and unwinding with a game or show. It’s a perfect time to sample a new gaming genre, for example. Casino games are one of the most popular new genres for New Yorkers, who now have access to slots, roulette, and more. You can click here to check the promos and select the right provider for you.

Or consider binging that new show that you’ve been eyeing. Summer is a great time to also check back on your favorite retro hits. Throw on a popular show or movie that reminds you of your favorite summer vacation, then let that nostalgic mood create a bit of magic.

Snack Smart When You Go Outside

Most people are focused on dressing appropriately when heading outdoors in hot weather. Along with wearing lighter layers, you might find that longer and looser layers also keep you cool. But don’t forget about snacking right, either.

This is often something that flies under the radar for many people. Summer, after all, is a time for snow cones and hotdogs—not exactly the stuff of diets. But what you eat can actually have a cooling effect. Cucumber, watermelon, and even yogurt will help your body cool down while also hydrating you. (Snow cones also work!)

Just beware—if you’re heading outside for a barbecue and will be eating heavier foods, your body will have more difficulty staying cool. It’s also easy to get dehydrated when eating a hefty meal in the heat. Be sure to drink plenty of water and find a cool, shaded area to digest.

Keep a Cold Pack (Or Two) Handy

Similar to learning how to snack when it’s hot outside, you might also want to keep a mini-arsenal of cold packs in your car or backpack. Obviously, you can’t keep an infinite supply hand—especially if you’re lugging around a bag instead of driving in a car.

But by keeping a few cool packs in a baggy, plastic bag, or cooler bag, you’ll have a cold solution nearby in case you start to feel dizzy or overheated. The bag (whether or not designed for storing cold things) will help retain the ice pack’s cold for a bit longer, extending its cooling abilities.

Though this isn’t a fool-proof solution and ice packs won’t last throughout a particularly hot day, this tip can prove helpful. It might also inspire you to create a more personalized cooling plan for those heat waves this summer.
