The City of Yonkers held ceremonies on September 11, 2022 commemorating the 21 anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks in 2001 that killed 26 Yonkers residents on that day, and the 9 first responders and construction workers who died in the years after.
Conor Park on McLean Avenue, and the memorial on the river with views of downtown Manhattan, are where the ceremonies are held, and the names read. Mayor Mike Spano led riverfront memorial by throwing a flower into the river for those lost. Yonkers Idol Darrin Sanders and Junior Idol Jalilah Le’Cruise sang The National Anthem and God Bless America. The Yonkers Police Color Guard and members of local Boy Scouts presented the colors.
Yonkers Poet Laureate Golda Solomon gave a reading. It was good to see the people of Yonkers unite, and remember on this solemn day.
