The people of Yonkers stepped up to help those who needed some help in order to have a Happy Thanksgiving.

On Sunday November 22, Council President MIke Khader, Mayor Mike Spano, partnering with PCNYinthestreets, Garden of Eden and the Hometown Foundation distributed 20,000 Turkeys and 50,000 pounds of produce to families in need. Dozens of community organizations from Yonkers lined up at Chicken Island as early at 6am to pick up the Thanksgiving packages, which were then distributed to food insecure families across Yonkers.

It was a very early and VERY successful morning at Chicken Island where my office along with Mayor Mike Spano , PCNYinthestreets , Garden of Eden and the Hometown Foundation distributed more than 20 thousand turkeys and 50 thousand pounds of produce to families in need! The holidays are all about giving back and helping those in need. I’m so proud of everyone who got involved this time around and cant wait for more collaborations!

Thanks to Stop & Shop for their donations to this worthy cause, and that is not a misprint–20,000 Turkeys! More on PCNYinthestreets and their partners next week.

Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano distributed over 250 Thanksgiving meals to needy Yonkers families at the Yonkers PAL last week. Each donation consisted of turkey and all its fixing. The deserving families were pre-selected by local community-based organizations. Special thanks for the private donations and the much needed support of Yonkers Contracting, ShopRite, Valley Oil Co and PCNY.
Since 2012, Mayor Mike Spano has organized the donations of Thanksgiving dinners to Yonkers families every November. And it was good to see the PAL building open again.

At a time when many seniors are not able to visit with family and friends for Thanksgiving due to the pandemic, the Municipal Housing Authority for the City of Yonkers (MHACY) made it a very memorable Thanksgiving with the delivery of 300 dinners to seniors residing in multiple MHACY properties in Yonkers. The dinners were prepared by renowned Restaurateur Peter Kelly of X2O the on Hudson Restaurant, and were underwritten by Mulford Corporation (Mulford) and The Fresnel Group (Fresnel). Mulford and Fresnel have collectively worked on behalf of MHACY to rehabilitate over 2,000 units of MHACY’s housing. The renovations have surpassed $750,000,000 in private investment in Yonkers.

“There is no reason why we cannot make these holidays brighter for seniors who may not be able to be with family and friends,’’ said Chef Peter Kelly.

Wilson Kimball, President and CEO of MHACY said. “We are so grateful to Peter Kelly, a success story who grew up in municipal housing in Yonkers, and our development partners for their on-going support of our residents.”
