Yonkers Remembers Those Lost on Memorial Day

Mayor Mike Spano, Director of Veterans Affairs Lou Navarro, with this year’s Veterans Essay and Oratorical contest winners

The City of Yonkers held Memorial Day events throughout the city last weekend, including the yearly ceremony at the War Memorial on South Broadway. Yonkers Junior Idol Amanda Gentile sang the national anthem and the Yonkers Police Honor Guard and the Empire VFW Post 375 Color Guard presented the colors.

Every year, the city holds an oratorical contest for Yonkers students who recite the Gettysburg Address. This year’s winner were Jonathan Guerrido and Ariel Pennington-Reyes, who did a great job reciting Lincoln’s famous speech.

Essay contest winners for 2019 included Bethany Garcia, Anthony Egiziaco and Prizila Negrete. Yonkers Idol Tori Israel ended the ceremony with “God Bless America.”
