Yonkers Public Library is bringing the global Repair Café movement to Yonkers with its first Repair Café, taking place Saturday, September 26, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Grinton I. Will Library.
The free community event invites residents to bring select broken or damaged household items and learn how to repair them alongside local volunteers and experts. Help will be available for clothing and knits, jewelry, electronics, computer programs, Nintendo Switch controllers with drift problems, small appliances, and bicycles.
Local experts include a jeweler from D’Errico Jewellers, representatives from Cornell’s Tru-Value in Tuckahoe, and technology and repair volunteers.
Repair Cafés are about more than fixing broken items—they bring neighbors together to share knowledge, learn new skills, reduce waste, and encourage a more sustainable culture. The movement began in the Netherlands in 2009 and has since grown worldwide.
“Repairing something can be an empowering alternative to throwing it away,” says Martine Postma, founder of the first Repair Café. “When communities are empowered, they’re capable of achieving more together.”
