On August 8, Mayor Mike Spano, Police Commissioner John J. Mueller, Westchester County District Attorney Miriam E. Rocah, and members of the Federal Bureau of Investigation Safe Streets Task Force today announced the arrests and indictments of members of the violent 300 Bloodhound Brims street gang in connection with a brutal North Broadway gang assault captured on surveillance camera. Eleven adults and three adolescent offenders were arrested and or indicted on charges including felony gang assault and robbery in the attack which left a 33-year-old male victim with bleeding on the brain, several broken and missing teeth, and abrasions to his face, back, and arms. The incident was captured on video yielding significant evidence in support of the investigation, summarized here.
On Thursday, June 17th, 2021, a large social gathering was taking place in the area of North Broadway and Ashburton Avenue in memoriam of a deceased community member; the event was being monitored by police detectives as known gang members were present. Around 9 PM, detectives witnessed an assault in progress, where a large group of young men attacked a single victim, punching and kicking him on the ground to the point of unconsciousness and removing his property. At the same time, patrol units were called to the scene; as police arrived, multiple people began to flee the area. On scene police officers coordinated in real-time with detectives and engaged in multiple foot pursuits; five assailants were apprehended within minutes of the incident. The victim was transported to a regional medical center with initially life-threatening injuries but was ultimately stabilized. The area was cordoned off and a criminal investigation was initiated.
Detectives from the Major Case Squad, Gang Unit, and Crime Scene Unit responded to the scene to interview subjects and witnesses, recover additional surveillance video, and process forensic evidence. Within hours investigators identified multiple persons of interest in addition to the five apprehended suspects. Local area video surveillance, in addition to video captured on personal electronic devices, yielded important evidence in support of identifying many of the individuals responsible for the assault. Working together with the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office and the Westchester County Department of Labs and Research, detectives and investigators spent the next several weeks meticulously reviewing the video evidence, frame by frame, in an effort to identify the perpetrators and establish probable cause for criminal charges.
Investigation yielded that the victim entered the convenience store located at 171 North Broadway and was followed inside by three of the suspects, identified as Vance MAJOR, Latrell MURRAY, and Perryon MCKENNY. Therein MAJOR, MURRAY, and MCKENNY accosted the victim and engaged in a verbal dispute. The victim exited the store, followed again by MAJOR, MURRAY, and MCKENNY, at which point MAJOR struck the victim in the back with a liquor bottle. The victim turned towards MAJOR at which point another suspect, identified as Develle COATES, ran up to the victim from behind and struck him in the head, knocking him to the ground. Multiple other suspects, identified in the video and named below, join in the melee and began punching and kicking the victim as he lay unconscious, resulting in multiple serious physical injuries; the suspects also searched the victim and removed his property, including two gold chains and a wristwatch, before fleeing as police started to arrive.
Thirteen of the subjects arrested, charged, and or indicted in this investigation are members of the violent 300 Bloodhound Brims street gang aka “the hounds”. This gang is responsible for or involved in numerous violent activities in the City of Yonkers and surrounding municipalities, including felony assaults, robberies, and multiple acts of gun violence and criminal possession of a weapon (firearm); and most recently, believed to be associated with the public space shooting of a six-year-old child on Ash Street on April 30th and the drive-by shooting of four victims on Elm Street on June 10th. The fourteenth suspect, Peter THOMPSON, is a known member of the Mak Balla Bloods street gang.
“Great work again by our Yonkers Police in removing these gang members off our streets,” said Yonkers Mayor Spano. “Gang violence is quickly becoming another pandemic affecting our urban centers, and by apprehending these repeat offenders who cause such destruction in our neighborhoods, residents can begin to feel safe again in their homes and communities.”
Police Commissioner John J. Mueller stated, “It has always been a priority of the Yonkers Police Department to combat gangs and gang violence in this City. From the moment this heinous act took place, we set out to bring those responsible to justice. After a lengthy investigation involving Yonkers Detectives and Police Officers along with our partners in law enforcement at the County and Federal levels, we were able to identify fourteen individuals who took part in this crime. This collaboration continued as we effected the arrests of these perpetrators and dismantled a violent street gang with a serious and lengthy criminal history. Let this be a warning to those who wish to take part in gang activity: the Yonkers Police will find you, arrest you, and deliver you in to the Criminal Justice System.”
“This was a shockingly brutal attack. These charges demonstrate our commitment to aggressively prosecute all violence, including gang violence, and to seek justice for victims of brutal attacks such as this one,” DA Rocah said. “The people of Yonkers deserve safe streets and we will work closely with our law enforcement partners to ensure that everyone feels secure in their community. I am very grateful for the collaboration and partnership of all of our law enforcement partners, including the Yonkers Police Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Westchester Safe Streets Task Force, the Westchester County Department of Laboratories and Research and the United States Office of Probation.”
