In an effort to stop the use of plastics bags and save the environment, the City of Yonkers is giving out free reusable bags at several locations. During his State of the City address this year, Mayor Mike Spano said “We’ve made great strides in recycling efforts over the last six years. However, those efforts are sometimes thwarted by the amount of single-use plastic bags that we produce and use,” Spano said.
“On average, these bags are used, get this, for about 12 minutes. Yet, the impacts on our environment last for generations. Spano proposed legislation that would “require all retail stores to impose an impact fee when dispensing non-reusable bags.”
Larchmont, Mamaroneck, New Castle and Rye are four Westchester communities that already have some type of plastic bag ban or payment requirement for customers. State approval and City Council review and approval are required for Mayor Spano’s proposal for a 5 cent fee for every plastic bag.
