Yonkers High School Students Give Back for Thanksgiving

Project Moxie -Year 2

YHS Student Government gives back to community through Yonkers Moxie Thanksgiving Drive

It’s that time of year when all of us should try to make an effort to help others for the holidays. Last year, we highlighted the efforts of Jordan Mendez, a student at Yonkers Middle-High School, who started a food and clothing drive to help families having a tough time making ends meet.

Mendez, now a sophomore at YMHS, has been working with student government to collect food, clothing and hygiene products to give away at a holiday celebration set for Nov. 22 at the Yonkers Riverfront Library fron 2pm-6pm.

Jordan has created a GoFundMe account to make it easier to make a donation. “I’m a high school sophomore, a boy scout, a poet, writer and most important, an activist. My desire to help people has manifested in my everday activities, including turning gardening projects into a way to address food insecurity; using photography for social impact and talking to people to inspire them to become uplifters. A small donation can make a big difference,” writes Mendez.

“I know most people want to help but don’t know how. So I came up with the idea of doing something and giving everyone the chance to help. “

Last year, Jordan was able to collect a large number of clothing to help his fellow students, “who felt insecure about their clothes.”

“Helping people does something to me. Last year was a success not only because of the goods for the community but it also united me and my peers with that special feeling. After the postive support and feedback, I’m proud to announce the 2nd annual Yonkers Moxie Project, We will provide food, clothing and hygiene products to anyone who comes to the 2nd floor of the Riverfront Library, community room AB,” said Mendez.

I made a donation, and was impressed by the compassion of this young man, who hopes to get involved in politics in Yonkers one day so that, “I can use my position to help the community that I live in and want to serve. Until then, I hope this becomes an annual event and helps people.”

Editor’s Note: I hope this story has inspired you to try and make a positive difference in someone’s life this Holiday Season. Or at least to make a donation to Jordan’s Yonkers Moxie Project. And have a Happy Thanksgiving!
