The high school football season is under way, and both of Yonkers High School football teams, the Yonkers Brave and the Yonkers Force, have been playing hard.
The Yonkers Force won their first two games of the year, against St. Dominick’s at home, 24-13, and against Ketcham by a score of 32-6.
The Force then played another top team in the state, Carmel high school, who came to Yonkers for a big game. The Force kept the score close in the first half, down 14-6 before Carmel pulled away for a 38-6 win.
The next game was against Mt. Vernon, at the newly opened Memorial Field in Mt. Vernon, before 2,500 spectators. It took the Force a little while to get used to the large crowd with Mount Vernon scoring four touchdowns in the first half. The Force didn’t allow a TD in the second half but lost and mounted a comeback but lost 34-24.
The Force played another top team in the state, North Rockland, losing 32-12, giving them a 2-3 record through a tough schedule. This weekend they play Suffern. Also this year, a record number of players came out for tryouts, with 144 seeking to join the team.
The Yonkers Brave is off to a slow start, with an 0-5 record, including a recent loss to Mamaroneck, 36-6, and losses to Sleepy Hollow and Ossining. The Brave play White Plains this weekend.
