Yonkers is abuzz after hearing the great news that Gorton High School Senior Rania Khan, was selected as one of the top 300 semi-finalists for the Regeneron Science Talent Search! In the country!
Rania is the first YPIE Regeneron Science Research Scholar to be selected and the second ever from #Yonkers. Her research focuses on the effects of combined sewer overflows on phytoplankton populations in the Hudson River.
The Regeneron Science Talent Search is the nation’s oldest and most prestigious science and math competition. Rania was selected from more than 2,100 applications and will receive $2000 for herself and her school.
The official announcement from Regeneron reads, “Rania Khan, 18, Charles E. Gorton High School, Yonkers, NY. Project Title: Combined Sewer Overflow Neutralizing Agent Sodium Hypochlorite (NaOCl) Ramifications on the Vitality of the Tetraselmis Population Within the Hudson River.”
On January 24, 40 of the 300 scholars will be named Regeneron Science Talent Search finalists. The finalists will then compete for more than $1.8 million in awards during a week-long competition in Washington, D.C., taking place March 6-13, 2024.
Rania is one of only 25 Regeneron semi-finalists from Westchester.
