Mayor Spano Signs Legislation to Expand Green Building Code to Include More EV Parking
Mayor Mike Spano signed legislation that will expand the Yonkers Green Buildings ordinances to cover new construction and major renovations citywide and require electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure to be installed at newly developed parking facilities. Mayor Spano’s signing of the ordinances comes after the Green Buildings Code legislation was passed by the Yonkers City Council on Tuesday, June 14th .
“Expanding participation in green development practices will further support energy and water conservation, lower emissions, reduce building operating costs and promote an overall healthier city for our residents and businesses,” said Mayor Spano.
The expanded Green Building Ordinance now applies to all non-residential developments greater than 15,000 square feet and residential developments with more than 25 units citywide. Additionally, the newly amended Ordinance requires new parking lots and garages with 10 or more parking spaces to be constructed with at least 5 percent of parking spaces, and not less than 2 spaces, equipped for EV charging.
Compliance with the expanded Green Building Ordinance will apply to all covered projects entering the design phase 90 or more days after the effective date of the legislation.
In May 2013, Mayor Spano signed into law a Green Building Ordinance, establishing a policy for the City to design and construct its facilities to be sustainable and to encourage commercial and residential developers to do the same. The City also adopted the Yonkers Green Development Workbook, including a checklist and standards, to guide this policy which required compliance for construction projects in designated areas of Downtown Yonkers.
