YONKERS DESIGNATED AS AN AMERICAN WORLD WAR II HERITAGE CITY

The City of Yonkers is the only city in New York State to be given the designation

City of Yonkers has been officially designated as an American World War II Heritage City by National Park Service’s American World War II Heritage Cities program. The prestigious designation recognizes Yonkers’ significant contributions to the war effort during World War II and its commitment to preserving the history of this pivotal period in American history. The City of Yonkers is the only city in New York State to be given the designation.

During World War II, Yonkers played a crucial role in supporting the war effort. Some of the highlights include:

Ø Home to over 75 companies that had defense contracts and manufactured 95% of the cable that sent fuel from England to France under the English Channel.

Ø Trained an estimated 10,000 men and women for “war work” at the Yonkers School of Aeronautical Manufacturing alone.

Ø Produced five World War II generals, four of whom were Yonkers High graduates.

“We are honored to receive this recognition in Yonkers as an American World War II Heritage City,” said Mayor Spano. “This designation is a testament to the City’s deep respect for its history and its commitment to preserving the memory of World War II for future generations. We are deeply moved by this recognition and pledge to continue our work in preserving and honoring the legacy of our World War II veterans. Their courage and sacrifice will forever be a part of Yonkers’ rich history.”

Director of Veterans Services Rev. William E. Norman, Sr. added, “Today is a proud day for Yonkers and for all of us at the Veterans Service. The designation of Yonkers as an American World War II Heritage City is not just an honor, but a tribute to the enduring spirit and valor of our city and its people.”

Yonkers will continue to honor this legacy through its preservation of historic sites, commemorative events, and educational programs.
