On Jan. 25, Yonkers City Council Member Corazon Pineda-Isaac announced the launch of the city’s new landlord registry that will provide Yonkers tenants with invaluable insight on potential issues and code violations on residential buildings before signing a lease. The registry, which will include all multi-family residential dwellings in Yonkers with over five units, will be available to anyone who wants access.
Pineda-Isaac, who was the lead sponsor of the Council’s resolution encouraging the city to develop and publicly post the database, spoke to her years-long fight to make the database a reality, “There are few things more important than having a safe place to call home. This registry will empower residents to make decisions on where they might want to live and raise their families before making a commitment to a rental unit. It will also serve as a public marker on which landlords are fulfilling their contractual obligations to their tenants and which ones aren’t.”
Maintained by the city’s Department of Housing and Buildings, the database will make it easier for residents to access public information on buildings that have open and unresolved violations. Yonkers City Council Member Corazón Pineda-Isaac
Juanita Lewis of Community Voices Heard, an organization dedicated to social, racial and economic justice for all New Yorkers said, “Every renter deserves to have a decent, safe and well-maintained home. I would like to thank Councilwoman Pineda-Isaac for her steadfast leadership on this issue and working with community leaders to make this resource possible.”
“I want to thank my government partners and community leaders for helping to advocate for the database and working to ensure that this resource is available for local residents. This a prime example of what can be achieved on behalf on Yonkers residents when we all come together to help move our community forward,” concluded Pineda-Isaac.
