Yonkers Arts will host the next Arts Speak event featuring Satish Joshi at the Blue Door Gallery on Dec. 16 at 6:30 p.m. Known professionally as only Satish, this event highlight his life, career in the arts, and his long connection with Yonkers.
Working in the mediums of painting, sculpture and printmaking, Satish is best known for achieving unique effects through experimental techniques. He pioneered a singular printmaking process, which he has continued to refine over the decades. Even his painting methods are unconventional; he mixes acrylic modeling paste, gesso and oils to achieve his signature three-dimensional effects on the canvas. While Satish has produced a variety of series in a range of materials over the years, his work is unified by an exploration of light, color, dimension, texture, and a reverence for the forms of the natural world.
After completing a degree with honors in painting and printmaking at the New Delhi College of Art, Satish settled in New York. A passionate advocate for the arts in his community, he has inspired generations of young artists at Riverdale Country Day School where he was a member of the Visual Arts Department from 1974 to 2011. He is currently artist-in-residence at the School of the Holy Child in Rye and teaches adults at Pelham Art Center.
Satish was a founding member of Art on Main Street in Yonkers, and served on the Board of Directors of Phoenix Gallery in New York City.
His artwork has been featured at venues including the Bronx Museum of Art, Columbia University, Queens Museum of Art, Consulate General of India in New York, Tabla Rasa Gallery in Brooklyn, National Arts Center in New York, Elaine Benson Gallery in Bridgehampton, College of St. Rose in Albany, Lois Richards Gallery in Greenwich, Conn., Patricia Judith Gallery in Boca Raton, Fla., Clark Whitney Gallery in Lenox, Mass., Rodger Lapelle Gallery in Philadelphia, Pen.., and Cygnus Gallery in San Diego, Calif.
This Art Speak event is one of many opportunities coming up to relish the career of the artist as Satish prepares for an expansive retrospective exhibition at Warburton Galerie in spring of 2020. Satish will celebrate his 50th anniversary in the U.S. with a retrospective exhibition of his paintings, prints and sculptures, along with never-before-seen works, at Warburton Gallerie from March 8 through April 3. The opening reception is scheduled Friday, March 13.
