The Warburton Galerie, located at 16 Warburton Avenue, Yonkers, will present a solo exhibition in honor of Satish Joshi’s 50th anniversary in the U.S., showing an extensive body of his work featuring paintings, prints and sculptures, including many never-before seen works. An opening reception was held on Friday, March 13.
A prolific visual artist and educator for five decades, Satish has produced a large volume of work spanning a variety of series and materials. All of his output is unified by an exploration of light, color, dimension and texture, which he combines in highly personal ways to express his reverence for the forms of the natural world.
Working in the mediums of painting, sculpture and printmaking, he is best known for achieving distinctive effects through experimental techniques. He pioneered a unique printmaking process, which he has continued to refine over the decades. Satish’s approach to painting is equally unconventional – mixing acrylic modeling paste and gesso with an overlay of oil paints to achieve his signature three-dimensional effects on the canvas. His paintings and prints have a close visual relationship with his work in stone and steel.
Satish’s artwork has been exhibited steadily for five decades and featured at venues including Bronx Museum of Art, Columbia University, Queens Museum of Art, Consulate General of India in New York, Tabla Rasa Gallery in Brooklyn, National Arts Center in New York, Elaine Benson Gallery in Bridgehampton, College of St. Rose in Albany, Lois Richards Gallery in Greenwich, Patricia Judith Gallery in Boca Raton, Fla., Clark Whitney Gallery in Lenox, Mass., Rodger Lapelle Gallery, Philadelphia, and Cygnus Gallery in San Diego.
A passionate advocate for the arts in his community, he has inspired generations of young artists at Riverdale Country Day School, where he was a member of the Visual Arts Department from 1974 to 2011, Satish is currently artist-in-residence at the School of the Holy Child in Rye. He was a founding member of Art on Main Street in Yonkers, and served on the Board of Directors of Phoenix Gallery in New York City for many years. He currently lives and works in Yonkers.
The exhibit will run through April 3. For more information, visit www.urbanstudiounbound.org/warburton-projects, email warburtongalerie@gmail.com or call 732-829-2511.
