YMA Lady Eagles Win Class B Title, Make Yonkers History! Onto the Final Four!

By Dan Murphy

Congratulations to the Yonkers Montessori Academy Girls Basketball Team for winning the Class B Regional final on March 15. Traveling to Long Island, the Lady Eagles defeated Cold Spring Harbor, 56-44, defeating the defending state champions.

Emilee Doherty scored 18 points and Anisa Mustafaj had 17 points. YMA now advances to the Final Four upstate, the first time ANY Yonkers team has made it to the Final Four. The game will be held in Troy, NY at Hudson Valley Community College, on March 20, at 3:15 PM.

The Lady Eagles are also the first Yonkers girls basketball team to win the Sectional Championship twice, with back to back titles.

Congratulations to YMA Coach Elie Moise for having his team prepared and on a mission to move further along in the playoffs than last year.

The win against Cold Spring Harbor was HUGE!.

“Going into Long Island and beating the Defending Champs in their own backyard was crazy. Very physical game! Point Guard Liliana Toro sat most of the first half with 3 fouls. With her out, YMA struggled with Cold Springs’ ball pressure and gutted it out to keep it close, finishing the half down 22-18,” said Chris Toro.

“YMA outscored Cold Springs by 18 points in the 2nd half to finish with a 58-44 win. Lili was able to play the 2nd half and controlled the flow of the game as YMA scored 40 second half points. Lili had 10 points in the 2nd half. Both teams played hard. Down at halftime.

Hostile crowd. Didn’t matter. YMA responded with toughness, poise, and heart.”

“I give the girls a lot of credit for holding it together and keeping it close in the 1st half without their PG. Cold Springs was really good too.”

Sophomore Emilee Doherty made the all-section team. Go Lady Eagles!
