A great reunion took place recently at Yonkers Engine Co. 306 at Oak Street, when members of the Yonkers Fire Department welcomed a 12-year-old boy and his adoptive mother. The boy had been dropped off at the firehouse more than 12 years ago by his mother, who was permitted to drop off unwanted children at firehouses as a result of a then-recently passed law.

The baby boy was welcomed and cared for by Yonkers’ bravest. Child Protective Services arrived and the boy was eventually adopted. The boy and his mother have moved from the area, but came by to say hello to the YFD.

The firefighters that day, who welcomed the baby and who are still members of YFD, include Lt. Steve Moreira (now Assistant Chief Moreira), firefighter John Folkerts (now Deputy Chief Folkerts), firefighter John Morrissey (now Lt. Morrissey), and firefighter Richard Laperuta
