Women’s Equality Party Endorses Sayegh

Democratic Assembly candidate Nader Sayegh

Condemns Janus v. AFSCME Ruling

Nader Sayegh, candidate for the 90th Assembly District has received the endorsement of the New York State Women’s Equality Party. Following the official endorsement of the Yonkers Democratic Committee, the Women’s Equality Party is the second political party to endorse Mr. Sayegh’s candidacy.

“I am proud to receive the support of the Women’s Equality Party,” said Mr. Sayegh. “As the father of five wonderful daughters, I know just how important the fight for women’s rights is, and look forward to running a campaign that is pro-choice, pro-equal pay, and stands in solidarity with the Me Too movement. The Women’s Equality Party represents an essential part of the progressive democratic coalition that will propel Democrats to victory across the country in 2018, and I am honored to have their support.”

The Women’s Equality Party is another addition to a growing coalition of groups and individuals backing Mr. Sayegh’s candidacy, including the Yonkers Democratic Committee, Teamsters Local 456, the Yonkers Council of Administrators, and the entirety of the Yonkers State Legislative Delegation.

Sayegh also condemned the recent Supreme Court ruling made in the case of Janus v. AFSCME. The Court’s ruling serves to significantly weaken public sector unions’ collective bargaining power, by preventing them from collecting fees from non-union members who still benefit from union activities in the form of contract negotiations, and other union activities.

“It is no secret – organized labor is under attack across the country, and the recent decision in Janus v. AFSCME is yet another assault on hardworking union families,” said Sayegh. “As a proud former union member, and someone who has had strong relationships with organized labor throughout my career, I know that union organizing is the most effective way for workers to fight for fair pay, fair benefits, and good working conditions.”

“We have all seen the devastating consequences of states adopting so-called ‘right-to-work’ laws,” Sayegh. “We cannot allow this to happen in New York. In the State Assembly, I plan on being a strong advocate for organized labor, and defending the right to organize across New York State.”

“This week’s news from the Supreme Court is the ultimate proof of the fact that elections have consequences,” Sayegh said in response to the retirement announcement of Justice Anthony Kennedy. “President Trump is remaking the Supreme Court and American jurisprudence in his own image, and exposing the American people to his dangerous and misguided agenda at every turn. We as Democrats need to run bold, progressive campaigns to resist the Trump agenda, and work to overturn the rulings that have recently emerged from the Supreme Court, including the ruling upholding President Trump’s travel ban, and Janus v. AFSCME.”
