Women Working Hard to Clean Up Mt. Vernon

City Celebrates Three Women Sanitation Workers on Garbage Truck

Khadijah Patterson, one of three woman working for the Mt. Vernon DPW on one of their garbage trucks

In a groundbreaking moment that marks a significant step towards gender equality and diversity in the workforce, the City of Mount Vernon Department of Public Works proudly announces that there will be three women laborer sanitation workers operating a garbage truck for the first time in Mount Vernon’s history.

In 2022, all three women were hired as seasonal workers during the “Love Our City Campaign” funded through the American Rescue Plan. The City of Mt. Vernon hired 25 seasonal workers who cleaned up more than 50 abandoned properties last summer. This year, they have worked on countless abandoned properties and blighted areas of the city that have been neglected for many years.

Congratulations to Kanya Antwe, Khadijah Patterson and Chakka Christopher, and thanks for your hard work!
