Acting US Attorney, Northern NY John Sarcone
By Dan Murphy
The Westchester Republican Party held its convention last week and nominated Christine Sculti for Westchester County Executive. Sculti will now run against Democrat County Executive Ken Jenkins on November 4.
Jenkins defeated Sculti in February in a special election to replace George Latimer, who was elected to Congress. This election on Nov. 4 will be for a four year term.
The Westchester GOP’s Slate of candidates include:
Judy Jakab-Derocco from New Rochelle for Westchester County Clerk
Edward R. Mevec from Buchana, for Westchester County Surrogate Court Judge
Joseph I. Farca New Rochelle, for Westchester County Court Judge
Jeanmarie A. Marquardt from Cortlandt Manor, Westchester Family Court Judge
Kevin R. Byrnes, Jr., from Yorktown, for County BOL District 1
Braille A. Diaz, Mt. Kisco, County BOL District 2
County Legislator Margaret A. Cunzio BOL District 3
Kevin O’Keefe, Baldwin Place, County BOL District 4
Joseph R. Devita Port Chester, County BOL District 6
Khristen M. Kerr, County BOL, District 8
Laurie Abbate-Ryan Cortland Manor, County BOL District 9
Edwinna Herrera New Rochelle, County BOL District 11
Michael Pineda Yonkers, County BOL District 14
County Legislator James Nolan, District 15
“We have a terrific slate of candidates,” said Westchester GOP Chair Doug Colety. “Christine is running again and we will fight tooth and nail in all our elections. We are going to run on the issues that voters are concerned about. The democrats are trying to destroy the country, and locally there is a lot we can do and run on.
“We have candidates for County Board of Legislators and County Executive. If we win both of those races, republicans in Westchester are ready. We’re back,” said Colety.
Colety pointed out that Sculti had three weeks to campaign for the special election last month, “I give her credit for running a good campaign and now with more time we can reach out to more people and work hard for all of our candidates. “We want voters in Westchester to take a closer look at Christine for November. And all of our candidates.”
Several Westchester republicans we spoke to said they hoped Assemblyman Matt Slater would run for County Executive. We hear Westchester Democrats did a poll, with Jenkins handily defeating Slater for County Executive.
“I thought Matt was going to run for County Executive this year, not only to help the party, but to get his name recognition out there for the future,” said one Yonkers Republican. “But I applaud Christine’s decision to run. She’s a fighter.”
In another development for a Westchester Republican, John Sarcone was appointed by US Attorney General Pam Bondi to be the US Attorney for the Northern District of New York.
“Attorney General Pamela Bondi has appointed John A. Sarcone III as the United States Attorney for the Northern District of New York. Mr. Sarcone will start on March 17,” read the release from the United States Department of Justice.
“As United States Attorney, Mr. Sarcone will serve as the Northern District of New York’s chief federal law enforcement officer, supervising an office of 49 Assistant U.S. Attorneys, 4 Special Assistant U.S. Attorneys, 41 support staff members, and 9 contract support staff members. He will be responsible for prosecuting federal criminal offenses and representing the United States in civil litigation in the Northern District of New York and in the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.
“Mr. Sarcone stated: “Coming from a humble, blue-collar background – growing up in Croton-on-Hudson, having the same teachers at Croton High School as my parents had, and with my grandmother and children also graduating from that school, and having worked full-time while going at night to the Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University– I am deeply humbled and honored to have been named U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of New York.
“I shall carry out my duties faithfully and with steadfast dedication to our nation, community, and the citizens of the Northern District of New York.
“Thank you, Attorney General Bondi, for trusting me to carry out this important mission and most importantly thank you President Trump for once again having faith and confidence in me to do my part to accomplish one of your most important tasks – to restore public confidence and trust in our government and the Department of Justice.”
“Mr. Sarcone, who will be based in Albany, has been a dedicated public servant and lawyer for many years. From 2018 to 2021, Mr. Sarcone served as Northeast and Caribbean Regional Administrator for the U.S. General Services Administration, overseeing a large team responsible for federal buildings and facilities, procurement, and IT initiatives, and working with dozens of federal agencies and courthouses, including in the Northern District of New York. Earlier in his career, he served as Town Attorney in Eastchester, New York, and General Counsel to the United Federation of Special Police Officers, Inc. and to the Association of Commuter Rail Employees.
Mr. Sarcone also founded and built a general practice law firm, providing advice to small businesses and family-owned corporations, handling large real estate transactions, and litigating and arbitrating in areas including business and construction disputes, insurance defense, and toxic torts.
Sarcone has run for Westchester District Attorney and State Supreme Court Judge. He was also interested in running for NY Attorney General two years ago.
But clearly, it was Sarcone’s ties to President Trump, dating back to 20126. “John has been with Trump since 2016,” said Colety. “He did a good job here in Westchester running for DA and now we have a Westchester republican serving as US Attorney. He put his heart and soul into Trump’s campaign.”
Sarcone must be confirmed by the US Senate.
