Westchester County Police K-9 Helps Arrest Teens Fleeing in Stolen Cars

New Rochelle Police & Eastchester Police Aid in Pursuit and Arrest; 19-Year Old Woman Arrested After Ramming Patrol Car, Injuring Officer

From the Westchester County Police Department-Facebook:

Three suspects traveling in two stolen cars were arrested yesterday despite their efforts to flee from the long arm of the law and the great nose of tracking canine Wren.

On the down side in this incident, an officer was injured after one of the suspects – a 19-year-old woman – deliberately rammed his Patrol car in her effort to get away.

The incident began at 2:18 p.m. when the Real Time Crime center broadcast an alert that two stolen cars were traveling together on southbound I-684. A WCPD officer was waiting when the two vehicles entered the Hutchinson River Parkway and he followed them south. In the New Rochelle area, where other WCPD officers had staged, a traffic stop was attempted but neither driver would comply.

The first stolen vehicle – a 2019 Audi A6 stolen in Milford, Conn. — exited at Wilmot Road in New Rochelle and crashed a short distance away. The driver, age 17, and passenger, age 15, bailed out and fled through nearby streets and yards.

WCPD and New Rochelle Police Department officers established a perimeter, and PO Hearle and his Bloodhound partner Wren arrived on scene. Accompanied by two Emergency Service Unit officers, PO Hearle and Wren began to track the two fleeing felons and soon found them hiding in a backyard on Northwoods Circle.

At the same time, the second stolen vehicle – a 2019 BMW sedan stolen in South Kingstown, R.I., – continued south on the Hutch and attempted to evade WCPD and Eastchester Police Department officers near Mill Road. The 19-year-old driver rammed a WCPD Patrol car when the officer boxed her in. She was taken into custody and the officer was taken to a local hospital. The bad news: he had suffered a significant leg injury.

The trio of teens were hauled back to HQ and booked on multiple charges. The 15-year-old was charged as a juvenile and released to his parents. The 17-year-old was arraigned and remanded to Woodfield Cottage. He faces charges here that include Criminal Possession of Stolen Property 4th Degree and Criminal Possession of a Weapon 3rd Degree (a high-capacity ammo magazine was found in the car.) He is also wanted on a warrant by Waterbury PD.

As for the 19-year-old, she was charged with Assault 2nd Degree, Criminal Possession of Stolen Property 3rd Degree, Criminal Possession of Stolen Property 4th Degree Criminal Mischief 3rd Degree, Fleeing an Officer in a Motor Vehicle and Reckless Driving. Stolen credit cards were found in her vehicle.

All around, this was a terrific job by multiple officers from Patrol, the Conditions Unit and ESU. Our thanks to the NRPD and Eastchester PD for their teamwork and assistance. We’re hoping for a speedy recovery for our officer who was hurt in the apprehension of these multi-state car thieves.
