We Endorse: Lakisha Collins-Bellamy for Yonkers City Council President -Democratic Primary June 24

City Council President Lakisha Collins-Bellamy, with County Executive Ken Jenkins

Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins, a Yonkers resident for all of his life, has endorsed Lakisha Collins-Bellamy for reelection as Yonkers City Council President. We agree with Jenkins and Mayor Mike Spano, who has also endorsed Collins-Bellamy. Our newspaper, Yonkers Rising, and website, Yonkerstimes.com, endorse her reelection for one main reason.

She has served the people of Yonkers with integrity, calm and reasonableness. We are impressed by the way she presides over the council and there is no reason, in our view, to change paths and remove her from office.

The reelection of Collins-Bellamy also fits into a larger narrative about the City of Yonkers that Mayor Spano likes to talk about. That the current progress in the City of Yonkers, and its more than 200,000 people, should continue.

Collins-Bellamy has been talking about the same theme on the campaign trail. She promised more education funding, support of the police, keeping propery taxes under control, and supporting smart development.

All of these things have been accomplished under Mayor Spano’s watch and with Collins-Bellamy leading the City Council.

This pair has done well for the people of Yonkers, and we would like to see more.

Mayor Spano has worked with most of the other democrats running for council president, and has decided to put his political capital with Collins-Bellamy.

We also appreciate the fact that you don’t get any drama with Lakisha. It’s all business and very little self promotion. While unheard of in Yonkers politics, its a breath of fresh air.

Collins-Bellamy also has the support and endorsement from the Yonkers Demcoratic Committee.
Why then, you may ask, have so many democrats stepped up to challenge an incumbent, Black female democrat who has done no wrong? You can come to your own conclusions on that question.

There has been no plausible argument presented by her opponents as to why Collins-Bellamy should not serve for another four years.

We believe that she has earned another term, and that together with Mayor Spano, they can keep the train that is the City of Yonkers, moving full steam ahead.

We endorse Lakisha Collins-Bellamy in the Democratic primary on June 24.
