On June 23, democratic voters across Westchester will be voting, either in person, or by absentee ballot, in an important primary for District Attorney. Rising Newspapers endorses Anthony Scarpino for re-election as Westchester District Attorney.
Scarpino has protected and served the people of Westchester, while at the same time enacting new progressive reforms to the criminal justice system. Crime is down 20% under Scarpino’s watch. At the same time, DA Scarpino has stopped prosecuting minor marijuana offenses and began to enact bail reform for misdemeanors and nonviolent crimes in his office before it became state law.
DA Scarpino has also enforced the Red Flag Law, which takes guns out of the hands of the mentally ill. And through the COVID-19 epidemic in Westchester, Scarpino’s office continued to protect the people of Westchester.
Scarpino’s opponent, former prosecutor Mimi Rocah, has not made the case to remove Scarpino from office. Over the past four years, Scarpino has exhibited a combination of prosecuting cases that keep the county safe, while at the same time implementing progressive reforms to his office. That balance is the reason why we endorse Scarpino for re-election in the democratic primary June 23.
