In 2020, New York tripled the number of signatures needed to get on the statewide ballot, from 15,000 to 45,000.
That’s greater than the population of Binghamton.
Five of the state’s seven minor parties lost their ballot line because of it. And the next race for governor was the first in more than 75 years to give New Yorkers only two choices.
Reforming New York’s ballot access laws would give voters more voices and more choices
WE AGREE!! Why was this done? It was then-Governor Andrew Cuomo, who was furious with the NYS Working Families Party and their nomination of Sex in the City actress Cynthia Nixon for Governor. Cuomo punished all minor parties by stuffing this new burden into the state budget, and nobody in the state legislature had the guts to tell Cuomo to take it out.
In 2024, all of us in NY had 2 choices for President: Donald Trump or Kamala Harris. There was no 3rd party choice available. That is an outrage.
