Breakfast may be the most important meal of the day, but for some area families starting the day with a healthy breakfast can be a challenge. Ursuline students began the new school year with a call to service by organizing “The Cereal Effect” in an effort to help local families who struggle with food insecurity.
Students at The Ursuline School, as part of the school’s 125th anniversary celebration, created their own domino effect with more than 1,500 boxes of breakfast cereal they collected for the
HOPE Community Services of New Rochelle, the largest emergency Food Pantry and Soup Kitchen in the region.
“We are extremely proud of our girls and grateful to the Ursuline community for their generosity in the spirit of Serviam – “I will serve,” said Ursuline School President Dr. Colleen Melnyk.
“Our goal had been to collect 1,250 boxes in honor of The Ursuline School’s 125th anniversary, but the girls surpassed that amount with more than 1,500 boxes,’’ said Cathy McCarthy, Director of Philanthropy. She thanked the community and sponsors Acme, DeCicco & Sons, Trader Joe’s and Wegmans for their donations.
Walter Ritz, Executive Director of Hope Community Services, said that The Ursuline School has been a long time and very active supporter.
“We are very grateful to The Ursuline School for all it has done. They have been a great partner and their efforts have benefited so many in our community,” said Ritz.
This is the second year that students have organized “The Cereal Effect” service activity to help fight childhood hunger. For their efforts, the students hope to create a domino effect of service throughout the community.
