Congressman Bowman Says NYS Party Chair Jacobs Should Resign
By Dan Murphy
Where did this headline come from? The NY Post? Or Perhaps Newsmax? Sean Hannity or Tucker? Nope, it comes from the NY Times, the Old Grey Lady herself, and reporter Ross Barkan, on Feb. 23. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/02/22/magazine/new-york-democrats.html
The story focuses on the loss of several congressional seats across the state, most notably, the loss to George Santos on Long Island and in Queens. And the four seats that democrats lost on Long Island, Westchester and the Hudson Valley, gave Kevin McCarthy the Speaker’s gavel.
But in Statewide races, Kathy Hochul narrowly defeated Lee Zeldin for Governor. But a win is still a win. Chuck Schumer beat Joe Pinion by 14 points.
The bad blood here in Westchester, between former Congressman Mondaire Jones and former Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney has still not been resolved. Democratic NYC Congressman Richie Torres accused Maloney of “thinly veiled racism.” Maloney kicked Jones out of his own congressional district, and lost, to Mike Lawler.
NYS Democratic Chair Jay Jacobs is taking some lumps for the losses, and rightfully so. He’s the manager of the team, and Progressive want Jacobs out ASAP. They see him as an Andrew Cuomo holdover
Here in Westcheter, Jacobs donated $2,800 to County Legislator Vedat Gashi, in his democratic primary against Congressman Jamaal Bowman. Bowman easily beat Gashi and will be reelected to his House seat for as long as he wants it. Bowman is one of the progressives, along with AOC, who want Jacobs out.
Bowman blasted Jacobs in the Times story. “I don’t know Jay Jacobs,” Bowman told me. “I’ve never talked to him on the phone. I’ve never met him in my life. Even though I was a newcomer in 2020, I was still duly elected, and I’m a member of the party now. One would’ve thought that the leader of the party would have reached out to have a cup of coffee or have a conversation.” Should Jacobs resign? The short answer is yes,” said Bowman.
Barkan also writes about how Westchester’s demographics are mirroring national trends, as the affluent suburbs grown more democratic. At the polls every November, Westchester remains a 60% Dem-40% Rep county. Some pockets of republican support remain in Yorktown, Harrison, Eastchester and East Yonkers, but with every year, more democrats move into Westchester while more republican move to Florida and Ron DeSantis.
